Typical Asset Management Planning:
1. A Complete Financial Assessment
A solid asset management plan begins with a detailed inventory of your current financial situation, your current investments, insurance coverages, a careful analysis of your short- and long-term financial objectives, and your attitude towards risk. We work together to address your financial goals through a series of in-depth questions that will help us develop your financial profile and ultimately lead us to an appropriate strategy. Some of these questions include:
When do you plan to or wish to retire?
Are you sending your children or grandchildren to college?
Do you have estate planning/distribution needs that require attention?
Are there special-needs funding requirements in the short- or long-term?
Are you likely to inherit additional assets?
Do you have a company 401(k) or similar retirement plan in place?
Do you have a business that may potentially be sold?
How aggressive/conservative are you by nature?
2. Develop a Model Portfolio
Based on our initial meeting, I will develop an understanding of where you are and where you want to be. I will study your current situation and then create a gameplan along with an outline of recommendations designed to help get you there.
I will develop a model portfolio that will be designed to help you pursue your stated investment objectives. I am a firm believer in the power of diversification and tend to recommend allocating your assets across a diverse range of asset classes and individual instruments. Diversification can help reduce overall portfolio volatility and risk. Examples might be equities in different industries, long and short duration bonds, targeted mutual funds, real estate options, fixed or variable annuities, cash or cash equivalents, etc. Diversification is typically a paramount theme in developing a quality portfolio. I also look at protecting your assets in the event of a market downturn. Every client should have a portion of their assets protected. The amount and the strategy has much to do with what we uncover in our initial conversations. Additionally, I will look at ways to defer, reduce, or eliminate taxes on your investments. After thoroughly analyzing the implications of various issues, I will recommend an appropriate asset mix, and then review your current holdings to see how they match up. I look for such things as industry concentration, overlap, liquidity issues, cost maintenance, etc. Only after this is completed should a carefully thought out diversified re-allocation of assets be considered.
3. Implementation
After presenting you with my recommendations and the rationale behind them, you decide if we proceed together in this endeavor. There is never any pressure from me for you to act. You are invited to take as long as you like to get comfortable with such an important decision. If you agree to proceed, and if assets need to be transferred into our firm from another, this is the time we would execute that. Once that is taken care of, I will begin to reposition your existing portfolio so it aligns with the model we created. Depending on how different your existing portfolio is from the model, and the built-in tax consequences of making wholesale changes, we may implement these changes over a period of time.
4. Ongoing Management Review
Markets change over time, as do your financial needs, and your investments should be reviewed on a regular basis to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. I keep myself educated about developments with products and companies you own on a daily basis. I pay attention to any and all news that could affect your portfolio. I will inform and advise you in layman’s terms as much or as little as you like. Some clients want an annual assessment, others want monthly. Regardless of those updates, I will always contact you if movement is required within your account. You should never feel as if you are being “sold” or put at undue risk. I respect your input. I inform and advise, but you make the ultimate decisions. I put a great deal of emphasis on getting to know you as an individual, a couple, or a family, and deeply understanding your short-term objectives and lifetime goals. I am always professional, accessible and responsive, and I realize that your financial return is your first priority, and I also know that delivering it with exceptional personal attention creates trust and confidence.
We provide monthly and quarterly reports that show current holdings, market values and recent transactions. We also provide our clients with online access so they can view their account(s) whenever they desire. You can be assured that all recommendations are made in a strictly objective manner and with one goal in mind: to manage the performance of your portfolio in line with your stated objectives.
